Lines on Your MacBook Screen? What to Check and What It Costs

For lines on a connected display, check cables and nearby interference first. For lines on the MacBook's own screen, run Apple Diagnostics to check the internal hardware, and if you can't fix it, Apple recommends service. With AppleCare+, screen damage has a fixed service fee.

Fixes to try (easiest first)

  1. Check cables and interference (external displays)

If the image flickers or glitches on a connected display, use good-quality cables and adapters, and move nearby electrical devices like fluorescent lights, radios or microwaves away. [1]

  2. Run Apple Diagnostics

Apple Diagnostics tests internal hardware such as the logic board and memory, and can run even if macOS won't start. Apple's 'Use Apple Diagnostics' article shows the startup keys for your Mac. [2]

  3. Rule out software

Apple Diagnostics doesn't check software or app conflicts. If it finds no hardware problem, try starting in safe mode or reinstalling macOS. [2]

  4. Contact Apple or an Authorized Service Provider

If you can't fix it, Apple recommends service from Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, and warns that untrained repairs or non-genuine parts may affect the device's safety and function. [1]
